Architecture: Hawai’i Off Grid Architecture
Principal: David Sellers Location: Maui

Graham Hill, founder of TreeHugger, wanted a minimalist and sustainable family home on the North Shore of Maui and reached out to Hawaii Off Grid to design it.  The house features advanced green technologies, including film-like solar panels, a water filtration system, and dry toilets that enhance soil health. Reflecting Hill’s belief that “a simpler life is a happier life,” the home minimizes reliance on communal utilities while showcasing eco-friendly materials and practices, making environmentally conscious living both functional and appealing. The easiest way to make something environmentally friendly is by making it smaller.” That’s the core concept of the LifeEdited home, explains Hill.

Sustainability is at the heart of the LifeEdited projects design, influencing everything from its steel rod foundation, chosen for recyclability, to toxin-absorbing Italian paint and recycled paper countertops. By collaborating with Hawaii Off Grid, it ensured green building practices while also blending luxury and practicality. The interior is a masterclass in space efficiency, with custom furniture, dual-purpose features, and durable, multi-functional kitchenware, proving that green living doesn’t sacrifice comfort or elegance.

A hub of innovation, the home’s garage, called “the nerd center,” houses cutting-edge Blue Ion batteries to store solar energy, powering both the house and Hill’s retrofitted electric Volkswagen. Hill sees this project as an opportunity for progress. Hill believes that true sustainability lies in maximizing utility and rethinking how we live.
