Our client wanted a clean, modern home, that both maximized the sun and light and withstood the weather in their rainy location. We worked within their desired square footage and budget to consider space, sound, and utilty.
As with all Hawaii Off Grid designs, the roof was a major consideration for this project. We wanted to maximize "active solar gain" - from solar panels for energy, while also maximizing "passive solar gain" by providing a roof that protects the building from allowing in too much sunlight and heat.
The low corner of roof provides protection from the area's weather and the corresponding roof on the opposite side of the hous is protecting from the western sun.
The sun protection of the roof overhang allows for walls lined with windows and glass doors. This fills the room with warm light without raising the temperature beyond comfort.
One end of the property holds the carport/worshop, the other end holds the master bedroom, and in the middle is the gathering area. This open-concept flex space allows for for a multitude of activities.
Large pocketing lanai doors create a bridge between the comfort of being inside while enjoying the fresh air and scenery of the surrounding environment.
This design uses lots of timber, one of our favorite materials to "sequester carbon". This is one of the processes of capturing a storing carbon dioxide, with the goal of reducing climate change.
